Mateja was raised in northern Utah, and developed an early appreciation for the ways growing and sharing food can strengthen both land and community while gardening with her grandparents in western Montana and Idaho. She believes food is a powerful connector that brings people together across diverse experiences, cultures, and beliefs. In 2024, Mateja served as an AmeriCorp member through the Montana Department of Agriculture, gaining hands-on experience farming the former SIFT Farm in Butte and offering community education about the local food system. During this time, she witnessed the need for a reliable, long-term resource to address food insecurity and expand food‑system knowledge in Butte. Drawing on her education in early childhood development, community health and social engagement, as well as her lived experience, Mateja is committed to growing and celebrating Butte’s local food system.
